Yaoyao: Orange Cake with Chocolate Frosting

image

Hello, every birdie. Today we are going to be making a straightforward cake. And even though it is simple, it does not mean that the taste is simple. I didn’t really care much for citrus flavors for the longest time. I don’t like citrus, because it makes my asthma act up. And if I drink orange juice it has to be pulp-free or it just sticks in my throat. We are going to be making an Orange Cake with Chocolate Frosting.

This recipe is inspired by a character named Yaoyao. She is a character who grew up with Xiangling and now she is working with Ganyu. She is very mature despite her age. Because she grew up with Xiangling, she is not very picky with food. And she can make whatever she wants to.

The recipe and the measurements will be in the description down below.

You will need:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil
  • Orange zest
  • Orange juice
  • Eggs
  • Sour cream (I used a sweet cream creamer because that is what I had. It tasted good.)
image

For the frosting

  • Butter/Margarine
  • Chocolate bars
  • Powdered Sugar
image

Filling

  • Orange pulp
  • Sugar
  • cornstarch

The first thing you should do is preheat your oven to 350F. Now you are going to spray 2 round cake pans with both non-stick spray and flour. Set it aside.

image

The reason that this recipe is so simple is that it is a one-bowl cake recipe. Which is great for the clean-up process.

image

In a large bowl, you are going to start by combining the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix it together with a wooden spoon.

image

Now with an electric mixer on medium speed, you are going to add in the oil, orange zest, orange juice, and eggs.

image

Add in your sour cream, beating until the batter is smooth.

image

Now you are going to evenly pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for somewhere between 25-40 minutes. Or until poked with a toothpick inserted the center comes out clean.

image

Once the cake is done, let it cool in the pans for at least 10 minutes. Carefully remove the cake from the pans and then let them cool completely on the wire racks. After 30 minutes, wrap the cakes in the fridge or freezer, and leave them in there for about another 30 minutes.

While the cakes are cooling. You want to make your filling and frosting.

image

I had a bunch of orange guts that I didn’t want to throw away. And so, I used them as a filling for the cake. I put the oranges in a pot, added some sugar, and then added a little bit of cornstarch. Place it in a different bowl and immediately place it in the refrigerator to cool it.

PSA via Robby: DO NOT ADD WARM FRUIT FILLING TO YOUR CAKE THAT HAS FROSTING ON IT. You will start crying. It will become a melted mess.

image

I had Dark Chocolate Bars in my kitchen, Powdered Sugar, and Butter.

image

I mixed together the butter and sugar until it was light and fluffy. If it looks like there is not enough butter, you can also add a little vegetable shortening. This helps with the stability of the frosting.

image

I melted the dark chocolate and cooled it before adding it to the frosting.

image

Once we have the frosting and the cakes made, we are going to put everything together.

image

Now, this is the point where I usually freak out. When it doesn’t go the way I want it to.

But this cake came out really well. The frosting wasn’t too sweet and all of the flavors meshed well together. I was so happy.
