Hey, everybirdy! Today we are making a recipe that is a massive hit in my house. I was chatting with my dad, or “Pop” as I call him, the other day, and since these are by far his favorite cookies, I just had to get a batch in the oven.

The Scrape Down:

Always remember to scrape down the sides of your bowl after adding the eggs and vanilla. This ensures everything is perfectly mixed so you don’t end up with hidden streaks of unmixed butter!

Flatten for Success:

These cookies don’t spread much on their own. Make sure to flatten your dough balls slightly with your hand or a spoon before putting them in the oven so they bake into a perfect cookie shape.

Don’t Overbake:

Pull them out when they are just golden brown. They will continue to set on the hot baking sheet, leaving you with that perfect chewy center.

Chill if You Can:

If you aren’t in a rush, wrapping the dough and chilling it overnight makes them even more flavorful. Just let the dough sit out for about 30 minutes before scooping.

Preheat:

Get your oven ready at 350°F.

Dry Mix:

In a small bowl, whisk together your flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set this aside.

Cream:

In a larger bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Eggs & Vanilla:

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in the vanilla and scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Combine:

Gradually add the flour mixture until it is just incorporated.Fold: Use a spatula to fold in the oats and raisins by hand.Scoop & Shape: Scoop about 1 tablespoon of dough at a time. Roll into a ball, place on the sheet, and flatten slightly.

Bake:

Bake for 8 to 12 minutes until the edges are golden brown.

Cool:

Let them rest on the sheet for a few minutes before moving them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Q: Can I add nuts?

Robby: Definitely! Walnuts or pecans go great in these if you want a little extra crunch.

Q: My cookies are too dry. What happened?

Robby: This can happen if the flour was packed too tightly in the measuring cup. Try “spooning” the flour into the cup next time for a more accurate measure!

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter; softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 ½ cups oats
  • 1 ¼ cups raisins

Directions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; set aside.
  • In a larger bowl, cream together butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time then add vanilla. Scrape down sides of bowl and mix for a few seconds more.
  • Next add the flour mixture a little at a time until incorporated. Finally, mix in oats and raisins.
  • If you are baking right away, measure out 3-4 tablespoons of dough, roll in a ball and flatten a little. Bake for 10-12 minutes. If you are waiting, wrap dough in saran wrap and chill in refrigerator overnight. When you are ready to bake, let dough sit out for about 30 minutes then measure out and bake cookies for 10-12 minutes.
