Sul Sul, gerbits. Today we’re going to be doing something different. As you can see we are not in the kitchen. That is because I wanted to share a story with you.

To all bakers out there, have you ever had a recipe that just did not come together? A recipe where it seemed like it was going well but, you forgot a step? Do your baking experiments just fail?

The recipe that I attempted to make was a zucchini pie. I thought it would be a good recipe, and I was ready to experiment with it.

If you want to try this recipe I will be adding it to the description below.

I had made the pie crust. The usual pie crust that I do, but I doubled it. Because I was going to make two recipes.

Measured out my flour and salt and placed it in a mixing bowl. Cut in my shortening and added the ice water 1 tablespoon at a time. Wrapped those up in a plastic wrap, and put them in the freezer.

Then I started on my pie. Preheated my oven to 400 degrees.

Skipped step one in the recipe and went to step two. The first step was probably where I messed up. It’s always lovely when you start off forgetting something. The first step in this recipe says that I needed to cook the zucchini. Strain it and then puree. I had shredded it and thought that was fine.

Oh my gosh, was it not fine!
The next step in this recipe states that I should mix the zucchini, maple syrup, and flour. However, my brilliant mind thought that I could substitute sugar with the maple syrup and it wouldn’t change the flavor of it.

I then added my eggs, milk, and cinnamon to this mixture.

Took out and rolled my pie crust.

Pour the zucchini mixture into the pie crust.

Baked the pies for 25 minutes. After that timer went off I decreased the temperature to 350 for a very long 45 minutes.

You know the pie is down when a toothpick comes out clean.
I thought they looked good. They smelled really good. But, when I brought them out, I just heard silence. And it was a different silence from the CARROT cake. The CARROT cake silence was very light and fluffy. While this silence was kind murky, like walking into a swamp. I hear from the living room “Um… Cordelia? Have you tried it?” I just scream NO into the void. And then I take a small piece of this pie.

It was like nothing I have ever eaten before. For one, the color was an off green, off brown color. That looked like someone threw up, and wasted a pie crust. And again, it wasn’t the recipe’s fault. It was the baker’s fault. From the picture on the site, it was supposed to be like a pumpkin pie, but what I ended up with was a waste of good zucchini.

The pie itself didn’t have the usual sweetness of zucchini bread. It honestly tasted like dirt. I know what some of you are thinking “Cordelia, how do you know what dirt tastes like?” To you, I say “growing up with siblings you are bound to get in a dirt fight. And some of the dir may get in your mouth. You spit it out as fast as you can, but the taste remains. You feel like you have to apologize to the earth for eating a little bit of her. *haha*” So yeah, that is what this pie tasted like.

It wasn’t the recipe’s fault. I just didn’t read the first step and I wanted to change one of the main ingredients. I may or may not make this recipe correctly in the future. But that was my story I wanted to tell you. I wanted to share it with you to show you that not all bakers make everything perfectly, every single time.

It was sad to throw away two complete pies. But, it was inedible, so there was nothing else to do. After that my confidence in baking was shaken. But, I will get it back. I hope you liked this story. Make sure to like and subscribe for more stories and recipes like this one in the future. Vadish Dag Dag.
