Easy Candy Cane Crinkle Cookies

Robby’s Winterfest Baking #1

The “baking therapy” discussed on this blog refers to my personal experience using baking as a self-help and relaxation tool.”

Hey everybirdy! If you’ve been following my journey since way back in 2019 on Tumblr, you already know that Robby’s Baking Therapy is all about finding a little peace of mind in the kitchen without breaking the bank. I’m a firm believer that you don’t need an expensive grocery haul to create 5-star treats, and these budget-friendly holiday cookies are the perfect example.

I made these for the very first time years ago, and now, the second a candy cane appears in our house, my family immediately starts asking, “Are you making the cookies yet?”

Why These Cookies Are Total Therapy

First things first: we’re using margarine here. It’s my absolute favorite secret weapon for holiday baking. Not only does it keep things beautifully wallet-friendly, but it also gives these crinkles an incredibly soft texture that keeps everyone coming back for seconds. (Plus, it’s a handy dairy-free swap if you need one!)

Then comes the best part: the candy canes. Pop them into a freezer bag, grab a rolling pin, and just start whacking. Seriously, if you’ve had a stressful week, this is where the baking therapy really kicks in! Don’t sweat getting perfectly even pieces, either—those chaotic, rustic little crunchy bits are what give the cookies the best texture.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3 candy canes (crushed, about ¼ cup)
  • ½ cup margarine
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (room temperature helps it incorporate smoothly)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • ⅛ tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Let’s Get Baking

  1. Prep Your Space: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line your sheets with parchment paper or give them a quick rub of margarine. Pro-tip: I always use light-colored baking sheets to ensure the bottoms stay golden and don’t burn.
  2. Cream the Base: Grab a large bowl and cream the margarine and sugar together until it’s nice and fluffy. Next, toss in the vanilla and your egg. Don’t worry about absolute perfection here—just give the sides of the bowl a quick scrape so every bit of dough gets invited to the party.
  3. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together your flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Slow and steady wins the race here—gradually add the dry mixture to your wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  4. Fold in the Mint: Gently stir in those crushed candy cane pieces. You’ll start to smell that amazing minty aroma immediately—it’s like a deep breath for your kitchen!
  5. Roll and Coat: Pour your powdered sugar onto a plate. Scoop a heaping teaspoon of dough, roll it into a ball between your palms, and give it a heavy coat of powdered sugar. (This straightforward batch easily stretches to make 24 full cookies!)
  6. Bake to Perfection: Place the dough balls at least two inches apart on your sheet—they spread more than you’d think! Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. You’ll know they are done when the bottoms are barely brown and the tops look “matte” (meaning they no longer look shiny or melty). Let them cool on the sheet for 3 minutes to set before moving them to a cooling rack.

Questions & Answers

  • How do I get the best “crinkle” look? The secret to that beautiful snowy contrast is a heavy coat of powdered sugar. If your kitchen is running hot, the sugar might melt into the cookie dough. To fix this, just chill your dough balls in the fridge for 15 minutes before rolling them in the sugar!
  • Can I use butter instead of margarine? Absolutely! While I love margarine as a budget-friendly swap, you can use room-temperature butter. Just keep in mind that butter cookies might spread a tiny bit more, so leave plenty of space on your baking sheet.
  • How do I store these?Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days (if they even last that long). To keep them extra soft, tuck a small piece of white bread into the container with them!

Easy Candy Cane Crinkles

I made these for the first time way back in December 2019. Now, whenever I have candy canes in the house, my family is always like, "Are you going to make your cookies?"

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3 Candy Canes Crushed. About 1/4 Cup
  • 1/2 Cup Margarine**
  • 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1/8 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar

Directions

  • Prep Your Space: Let's get our kitchen ready for a little baking therapy! Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease your baking sheets with nonstick spray or line them with parchment paper. Set them aside so you're ready to go.
  • Crush & Release: Put your candy canes into a plastic bag and give them a good smash with a rolling pin until they are finely crushed. Set those beautiful peppermint bits aside for later.
  • Cream with Care: In a large bowl, cream together your softened margarine and sugar until the mixture becomes wonderfully light, fluffy, and smooth. Once it's perfect, mix in the vanilla and egg until combined.
  • Whisk Your Dry Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, stir together your flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda—leaving the powdered sugar out for now.
  • Bring It Together: Slowly mix your dry ingredients into the wet mixture until it's just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, and then gently stir in those crushed candy canes.
  • Roll into Sweetness: Pour your powdered sugar onto a small plate. Scoop a heaping teaspoon of dough, roll it into a neat little ball in your hands, and coat it completely in the powdered sugar until it looks like a mini snowball. Place it on your baking sheet and repeat with the rest of the dough.
  • Bake & Breathe: Bake for 9 to 11 minutes until the bottoms are a barely-there golden brown and the tops look beautifully matte and crinkled. Let them rest on the warm sheet for 3 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
